Disclaimer: I am definitely not a medical doctor. This blog offers insights based on general knowledge and should not replace professional medical advice. Always consult with your healthcare provider before making significant changes to your exercise or nutrition routine, especially after cancer treatment.

Introduction

Most of us either have had someone close in their lives affected by cancer, or themselves had to endure it.  Surviving cancer is a profound victory, but it marks the beginning of a unique journey. Beyond the medical treatments, life after cancer presents its own set of challenges. You may not recognize your body after treatment, whether it is due to muscle and weight loss from chemo and/or radiation.  Or maybe you gained weight from medications like steroids or hormone therapy. In this blog, we will delve into the importance of exercise and nutrition in the post-cancer experience.

**Exercise: Rebuilding and Adapting**

Exercise remains a cornerstone of post-cancer recovery, but it should be approached with an awareness of the potential changes to your body:

**1. Gradual Rehabilitation:**

   - Start your exercise journey gradually, acknowledging that your body may have undergone changes during treatment and medication. This slow start allows for rebuilding strength and adaptation to your new normal.  Start small!  Some day may be better than others and that is OK.

**2. Strength Training:**

   - Medications and or treatment may have impacted on your muscle mass and bone density. Incorporate resistance training to counter muscle weakness and promote overall fitness.  Maybe you have found you lost strength – so starting with resistance training would be a great start rather than starting on the weights right off the bat.

**3. Emotional Well-being:**

   - Exercise's positive impact on mental health is particularly valuable after cancer treatment, especially when facing the emotional toll of from being sick.  Be gentle with yourself, but also patient.

**4. Support Networks:**

   - Consider joining support groups offering tailored fitness programs for cancer survivors. These groups provide motivation, camaraderie, and the understanding that comes from shared experiences.

**Nutrition: Nourishment and Healing**

Balanced nutrition is equally essential, especially when your body may have undergone significant changes due to cancer treatment and medications:

   - Prioritize a well-rounded diet featuring fruits, vegetables, lean proteins, and whole grains. These foods supply essential nutrients for healing and maintaining health.  Proper hydration becomes even more crucial when medications may affect your body's water balance. Staying hydrated supports optimal body function.

   - Consulting with a registered dietitian is invaluable. They can create a personalized nutrition plan, considering your unique post-cancer needs and medication side effects.

Final Thoughts

Post-cancer life is an ongoing journey, often marked by physical and emotional changes. Exercise and nutrition serve as steadfast companions, providing tools not just for recovery but also for prevention and overall well-being.

*It is essential to recognize that every survivor's experience is unique.  Always seek guidance from healthcare providers, oncology nutritionists, or fitness trainers who can develop a tailored plan based on your individual needs and medical history.

As a multiple cancer survivor, I try (not always!) to cherish each day as an opportunity to thrive. Exercise and nutrition are our allies in this journey, helping us regain control of our health and live life to the fullest, adapting to the changes our bodies may have encountered during cancer treatment.
